I just read a fantastic book called "The Blue Zone." A National Geographic reporter did interviews around the world with people living 100+ years. He compiled all the interviews and came up with 9 things that all (or almost all) of the people said they did that contributed to their longevity. Here they are:
1. Move naturally, be active without having to think about it
2. Cut your calories by 20%, eat until you are mostly full but not completely stuffed
3. Avoid meat and processed foods
4. Drink a glass of red wine every day
5. Take time to see the big picture, define a purpose for your life
6. Make stress relief an important part of your life
7. Participate in a spiritual community
8. Make family a priority
9. Find your "right tribe," surround yourself with people who support and believe in you and the things you care about
Any surprises in there? I don't really think so. When I think of the people in my life who are truly happy, they follow most of these ideas. Active, relaxed people who love their families, take care of themselves, spend time with people they love, pursue their interests, and know a little something about who they are.
What can I do today to include one of these 9 ideas in my life a little bit more?
