The Great Pumpkin

There has been a discussion on our CIFAN message board about Halloween and The Great Pumpkin. I am jazzed about stealing the idea. Thanks, smart food allergy moms!
What you do is, allow all the kids to trick or treat as usual. Then, everybody sorts out the "safe" candy from the "not safe" candy. Already it's a great idea, because John is getting practice reading labels and recognizing safe foods and not safe foods. You gather up all of the "not safe" candy and put it in a bag out on the front porch. The next morning, the Great Pumpkin takes the bag and leaves a treat behind, like a toy or book, etc. for all the kids.
John may be just a little too old for this, but I think he will still enjoy it. Lucy will think it's completely awesome. Isaac will blow bubbles and coo.
I wish I had been doing it all along!

Becky, can you tell us what kinds of candy are normally safe for kids with food allergies? I'd love to choose that kind just in case we have any neighborhood kids with allergies.

Your idea is good for any family, to help lessen the amount of sugar the kids are ingesting!!
