88 Broadway

So, after missing Sharon's birthday party last week at 88 Broadway and hearing about the college students hitting on moms and pregnant women dancing to 80's hits, I had to check it out for myself. Last night Kimberly, Sarah and I went there to have the fondue and chat. We did the 4-course fondue thing they have. It starts with cheese, then you have a choice of I think 5 salads, then a meat and veggies fondue and finally chocolate with fruit, marshmallows and cake. I had a great time with fun friends and good conversation. The three of us agreed that it was a fun atmosphere and a fun place to go with girlfriends but the food was not spectacular. It was good but plain. Fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, a little bit of marinade on the meat but not that flavorful. The dipping sauces for the meat were OK (Sarah loved the curry mustard). Once the dueling pianos started up around 9 PM it was LOUD. We almost couldn't hear each other talking! So plan to go elsewhere to keep chatting at 9 PM or be prepared to join in the singing.
I don't think I would take Kevin here for a date night, but I would go back with friends if they wanted to!

You really didn't like the food? Maybe it was my 2 glasses of Reisling and my "The 88" martini, but I liked it! My salad wasn't as good as I'd hoped (I got the caprese), but I really liked the meat with the sauces, particularly the plum sauce and the asian peanut. The dessert was yummy too--I LOVED the sugar-coated marshmallows! Seriously, how do you make marshmallows better? By coating them in sugar!!! :)

I guess I know what you mean about plain, but the only other fondue I've had (besides real basic meat fondue at my in-laws) was at Gejas in Chicago. And, pricewise there was such a difference to 88 Broadway, that I can understand the flavor difference. Plus, at Gejas the meat was cooked in oil, not broth (like at 88). Maybe that was the kicker?

Anyway, glad you went. We were sitting in the far corner booth, and though it was loud at 9:30, we were far enough away to still be able to talk.
